Nathan Pinti’s Spark Bird Story

Bufflehead. What a great name.

It belongs to a small duck with a striking black-and-white body and a gloriously oversized head that shimmers green and purple in the light. That puffy head is what earned it the name bufflehead, a nod to its “buffalo-headed” appearance.

I wasn’t a birder at the time, not even close. But this little duck caught my attention one summery day on the Ausable River in Michigan. I was with my girlfriend Devon, an avid birder and the owner of this very site, when we spotted them. Naturally, Devon wanted a closer look. And, curious myself (having mostly only seen Mallards before), I followed along.

We watched a pair of Buffleheads moving together, likely a mating pair, and got some great looks, including a close-range flyby right along the river. Their sleek coloring, that oversized head, and of course, the name Bufflehead, it all stuck with me.

That moment became a turning point. My spark bird.

But the real shift came when Devon invited me to a birding event, a “Big Sit” (Another excellent name. Birders are really nailing it in that department.) In preparation, I downloaded the Merlin Bird ID app and started casually logging what I saw. Naturally, my first entry was the Bufflehead.

From that point on, I was hooked. Merlin made it easy and fun to get into birding. It lowered the barrier, suddenly I could identify birds by sight and sound, and keep a Life List to track all the species I’d seen.

At the Big Sit, we spotted more than 20 species in just over an hour. This is when it struck me that birding, with the help of Merlin, is a lot like Pokémon Go, but real, not just on a screen! The dopamine hit of seeing a new species pop up on Merlin’s sound ID, identifying it, and adding it to my Life List was surprisingly addictive.

Fast forward a few months, and I hit 100 species. I found myself going out of my way to bird, fascinated by the sheer variety of species, their calls, colors, behaviors.

So here’s to my guy, the Bufflehead. He (along with Devon and Merlin) launched me into a whole new hobby. I can’t wait to see my next 100 species and to share the joy of birding with friends and family along the way.
